I was shocked and saddened last week to learn about the passing of Matthew Shear, Executive Vice President and Publisher at Macmillan/St. Martin’s Press.

Though I didn’t know him well, he was kind to me from the moment I sold to St. Martin’s, & one of the last things he said to me was, “We have you under contract again, right?”

Each time I saw him RWA or one of St. Martin’s lovely cocktail parties, he was friendly & delightful, ready with a quick smile & hearty handshake.

I’m going to miss seeing him at conferences, & can only imagine how devastating his loss must be for his family & those who worked closely with him.

Rest in peace, Matthew—you will be very dearly missed.
