from Boardroom back to the drawing board

PhotobucketWe all knew this was coming…the day A BABY IN THE BILLIONAIRE’S BOARDROOM gets retitled. :nowait

For the record, I like A BABY IN THE BILLIONAIRE’S BOARDROOM.  It’s a perfectly respectable title for a Harlequin Desire.  Especially one that’s about a baby. And a billionaire.  And a baby in a billionaire’s boardroom. :howyoudoin

But I’ve known for a while now that Desire’s titles are moving a little bit away from the “millionaire” & “billionaire” type.  Not to mention that it might be a bit repetitive to have “Billionaire” in the title of a book that will also have the “Billionaires and Babies” mini-series flash on the cover. :scratchhead

So when Editor C asked me to start thinking of new titles for the story, I wasn’t surprised.  I was, however, a tiny bit stumped.  Even though I’d expected to need a new title & had actually been trying to think of new ones all while I was writing the book, darned if I could think of anything suitable.

When the pressure was turned up, though, I put on my Thinking Cap, dug out my thesaurus, & really started trying to come up with something terrific.

The easy part was making a list of words & themes I could play with.  This story, thank goodness, has a little bit of everything…

Revenge … a secret baby … mistaken identities … a socialite … a billionaire … jewelry design … diamonds/gems/jewels/jewelry … surprise fatherhood … riches to rags & back to riches …

Too much, maybe, to land on anything solid.

Editor C sent me some of his ideas:

Much More than Business
Boardroom Baby Maneuvers
The Boardroom Baby Chase
From Bedroom to Boardroom
A Bedroom, a Boardroom, a Baby
Here Comes the Baby
Boardroom Baby

And I sent some of mine back:

A Baby in the Boardroom / A Baby in His Boardroom (just drop the “Billionaire” :))
The CEO’s Secret Heir (hey, you said I could try to use it again someday & it totally suits the story! :))
Accidentally in Love
His Favorite Mistake
Daddy by Design / His by Design
Diamonds and Deception
His Sparkling Temptation
The Socialite’s Secret / Secrets of a Surprise Socialite / The Secret Socialite
Sins of Omission
Sins and Secrets
Sins of His Past
Secrets and Lies / Secrets, Lies, & Lullabies (I kinda like the second one :))
In the Enemy’s Bed / In the Enemy’s Arms
Sleeping with the Enemy
Seducing the Enemy
Bed of Lies
Regarding Henry
From Rags to Revenge
Blame it on the Baby
His Crowning Jewel
All That Glitters
Winner Take All
A Conflict of Interest

So what do you think?  Do you have any favorites? :cheer

And can you guess which one Editor C & I decided to use? :patrick

(NOTE:  I’ll do a Big Reveal & share the final title next week. Be sure to check back so you can’t accuse me of being a total tease. :devil )

I love Sleeping with the Enemy. I think that would make a great title.

    • Heidi says:

Ditto. I do worry a little about too many people going straight to the Julia Roberts movie, but that might not be a bad thing. :bubble

  2. Donna says:

I’m partial to His Favorite Mistake.

  3. Pam Lowery says:

I Like Secrets, Lies & Lullabies a neat title i think!

  4. Pamela Cayne says:

I like From Bedroom to Boardroom and A Baby in the Boardroom. But I think my favorite words on the cover of a Desire are Heidi Betts. :eeee

  5. Kathleen O'Donnell says:

I like “Daddy by Design” or how about “Design’s on the Baby Daddy”… :scratchhead

    • Heidi says:

Ooh, I like that one, Kathleen. Not sure it would be exactly accurate, since the heroine is kind of trying to *avoid* her baby’s daddy, but I still like it. :happysun

  6. Laura J. says:

Editor C’s suggestion of The Boardroom Baby Chase has me cracking up! :lolol Images of a super hottie Alpha male chasing after a baby crawling around desk or in a boardroom were floating through my mind. What? I have a vivid imagination. :howyoudoin

Here are my faves from above:
    Secrets, Lies, & Lullabies
    Regarding Henry
    Blame it on the Baby

    • Heidi says:

:lolol Now that’s what’s running thru MY head! :Cukoo

I like some of the same ones you do. But you know what my major problem is with brainstorming titles? That I can’t use ALL OF THEM!!! :patrick2

  7. Michelle Cunnah says:

I can’t wait to see which title you chose. There are a lot of great ones up there, but my favorites:

    Secrets, Lies, & Lullabies
    Regarding Henry
    Blame it on the Baby
    Sleeping with the Enemy

There, now that was totally unhelpful, wasn’t it? 🙂

    • Heidi says:

I know—it’s so hard! Would be easier if I had a bunch of really bad titles & one nice, shining goody. But when they’re all kind of catchy & interesting… :scratchhead Followed by :slamdesk

  8. April Kirkland says:

I thought to myself “if all of these were book titles sitting beside each other and I had nothing but the name to go by which would I choose?” Well the answer is

    Secrets, Lies, & Lullabies

It’s just so intriguing. To me it’s the best attention grabber. Trust me I have a halo :angel *see* :lolol

  9. Hollie says:

    I like Secrets,Lies and & Lullabies…and I see NOTHING about His Family Jewel…. :howyoudoin

    • Laura J. says:

      bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

    • Heidi says:

Oh, you don’t think that one slipped by me, do you? It *was* on my list…mentally. Tried really hard to come up with something I thought would fly, too. Because I’m naughty that way, & obviously it’s rubbing off. :devil

  10. Ruth Chestnut says:

My vote is for Secrets. Lies and Lullabies. Second favorite Boardroom Baby Maneuvers. But what ever the title, we all know the book will be great. :thumbsup

  11. Jessica Lemmon says:

Daddy by Design & Secrets, Lies & Lullibies are my faves! :thumbsup I also love Regarding Henry…but didn’t know if it was punchy enough to make the Desire cover. :scratchhead
